Randall,

I have just returned from a 2 week trip to Europe. The general sense is one of very significant dissonance - on one hand, every single person I spoke to complains of inflation, cost of everything, lack of housing, difficulties in day to day life; and this is even very well-to-do directors at investment firms and such. On the other hand, the notion of 'conservation' - of environment, of "climate", is so heavily and deeply ingrained that the former difficulties don't even register in a cost/benefit analysis of the latter.

The ideology is extremely strong, and since Europe is still a fairly wealthy place all said, and since energy poverty drowns the population from the bottom up, it will take quite some time before this becomes obvious to even the most ardent ideologue

You know, the USSR willfully destroyed their economy for years and it still took the better part of a quarter century before the whole thing went to pieces. The basic tenet that "Energy is life" and low cost, reliable and abundant energy is a prelude to a wealthy & healthy society is totally lost on current leadership, OR, they are so totally deluded to believe that at the end of the Transition road is a pot of gold where their energy dreams come true. We live in a strange time

Great article. Looking forward to 25 more years of intelligent analyses like this one - while being forced to endlessly endure the diktats of Very Important Idiot Ideologues (elected and non-elected).
